RuPaul’s Drag Race, Season 5, Episode 1

Hold on to your wigs hunties, the best reality show on television is back!  Who will have the Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve, and Talent to take home this season’s top prize?  Time to check out this year’s queens:

The ladies, in order of workroom appearance, with my brief thoughts on their debut outfits.

Detox.  Love her bumblebee corset look and feathered headpiece.

Roxxy Andrews.  Pageant queen.

Jade Jolie (FROM GAINESVILLE, GO GATORS!!!).  I want to like her but she’s looking a little cray.  She looks and sounds like a lady out of drag too, which is a bit disorienting.

Serena ChaCha (from Tallahassee iiiiicccck). Self-described “Fine Art Drag”

Alyssa Edwards.  Self-described “The Vanessa Williams of Drag.”

Jinx Monsoon.  This season’s Tammi Brown, no question.

Penny Tration.  Token big girl–and the People’s Choice Winner in the online voting.

Vivienne Penay, Dita von Teese drag. Also a little Jujube.  Love her look though.

Alaska.  Sharon Needles’ boyfriend, yeah!  She came in wearing a horse mask, also, and is wearing trashbag couture.

Honey Mahogany.  Busted.

Ivy Winters.  Wearing garbage.  Used to work as a clown.  Still does.

Monica Beverly Hills.  Dita Ritz?  Is that you?

Lineysha Sparx.  A PR queen, wearing a goooorgeous yellow sculptural thingamajigger.

Coco Montrese.  In leopard print.  She and Alyssa Edwards have some history involving not speaking in two years, a pageant tore their friendship apart.  This is going to be fantastic.

Fourteen girls enter, only one will win.  I can’t wait!

Mike Ruiz is on hand for the girls’ first photoshoot–an underwater glamour shot.  Serve fish, Mike says.  So clever.  The girls have to look glam and fab as the water destroys their wigs, this is joyful.  Jade Jolie says she was giving Helen Keller drowning realness.  Detox gets a GREAT shot.  Jinx Monsoon can’t swim, loses her contacts.  These photoshoots are engineered for maximum queen humiliation and this one, of course, does not disappoint.  Also, Alaska quits the photoshoot?  Whoa.  I figured a theme this season would be: “Can Alaska fill Sharon’s giant shoes?”  I just figured that it would develop a bit later on, not this early in the show.

Hahaha, Jinx just described herself as Seattle’s premiere Jewish narcoleptic drag queen, oh she’s going to be entertaining.  Anyways, Detox wins the photoshoot challenge–unsurprising, her photo was great!  Drowning bumblebee in paradise!

Doctor Who Video Mash-Up Possibilities

Okay Internet, I have zero video-editting capabilities on my computer and I also do not have access to a wide range of Doctor Who video clips, so I’m throwing this out there to provide you with inspiration. You can use this inspiration as you see fit, but if you do make something as a result of this inspiration just, um, you know, link back to this post on my blog please.  Thanks.

Someone needs to make Doctor Who mash-ups to the following two songs:

The first one is pretty obvious–Justin Timberlake‘s “Suit and Tie.”  So many possibilities for the 10th and 11th Doctors, right?

I actually love this song, it makes me want to dance and such.   And I think it’d provide a great backdrop to a montage of Doctor/Companion shenanigans.  But mostly I am just thrilled that Justin Timberlake is making music again–the world is a better place, yeah?

So the second video that must happen is 11th Doctor specific, and this is also an amazing song, one of my favorites really:

OutKast‘s “Bowtie” guys!  Come on, guys, this is such a no-brainer right?  Lots of Matt Smith, adjusting his bowtie, all “Bowties are cool,” being a double-hearted pimp in the TARDIS.

Someone make this happen please just, yeah, give me credit, thanks.

7 Days to Dragon*Con: Shall we talk guests?

ONE WEEK I CAN HARDLY STAAAAAND IT.  But onto today’s post!

As usual, Dragon*Con has a pretty fun guest list.  Here are some guests about whom I am pretty excited:

Jamie Bamber:  Hot Lee Adama goodness so say we all.

John Barrowman:  I’m watching Torchwood as we speak but I’ve been into John Barrowman for awhile because he is uber gay-rights, does musical theatre, and is incredibly handsome.

Amber Benson:  OMG remember when Tara gets shot and is all “Willow, your shirt…” and then she dies and it is terrible?  It wouldn’t have been as terrible if Amber Benson hadn’t portrayed Tara so heartbreakingly well.

Billy Boyd:  Fool of a Took!

LeVar BurtonSee this post.  Also, this post.  Also, Kunta Kinte.

James Callis:  I always thought that the way Caprica Six pronounced “Gaius” was hilarious.

Vinent CasoTaste my pirate patty!

Felicia Day:  Self-explanatory.

Michael Dorn:  I really just want to ask him if he actually likes prune juice.

Jane Espenson:  She’s written for basically every show I like ever, like Star Treks TNG and DS9, Buffy, Angel, Firfly, Dollhouse, BSG, Caprica, Game of Thrones, etc.  Girl power!

Jonathan Frakes:  “He’s my number one dad!”

Kat Graham:  I remember when I first saw her on The Vampire Diaries I was all “Oh wow she is so beautiful who is that girl.”

Anthony Michael Hall:  “I’m a fucking idiot because I can’t make a lamp?”

Juliet Landau:  “Miss Edith speaks out of turn. She’s a bad example and will have no cakes today.”

Sean Maher:  I know it is weird but any cool, chill actor who is out just gets so much respect from me.

Joe Manganiello:  Words cannot express how good looking this man is, for realsies.

James Marsters:  I still refuse to believe that he is not actually British, despite having heard his real accent.  To me, he will always be Spike.

Rose McGowan:  Fact, I totally love Charmed I totally do.

Steven R. McQueen: I am also so into The Vampire Diaries and so am just going to be putting them all on the list, real talk.

Jason Momoa:  “Crown! A crown for Cart King!”

Kathy Najimy:  I re-watched Sister Act last night–how great was she in that movie?  Also, Hocus Pocus?  She’s so good in that.  “Burning rain of death” come on, y’all.

Nichelle Nichols:  I’m still holding out hope that George Takkei will make a surprise appearance with her.  I thought these two were basically a matched pair!

Amy OkudaThe Guild is great, so everyone who is on The Guild will also be on this list.

Sandeep Parikh: See above.  He also did The Legend of Neil, which is one of the funniest things I have ever seen ever.

Robert Picardo:  I have a soft spot in my heart for Voyager’s Doctor.

Carrie Preston:  I love that she’s married to Michael Emerson, what a power couple, for realsies.  Her Arlene is one of my favorite parts of True Blood.

David Prowse:  So the man who walked around in the Vader suit actually does conventions, amazing.

Darth Vader and The Guild (sort of)

Patricia Quinn:  The lips that launched a thousand midnight shadowcasts.

John Rhys-Davies:  “I cannot jump the distance, you’ll have to toss me.”

J. August Richards:  Gunn!!!

Tim Russ:  Tuvok!!!

Katee Sackhoff:  A million, billion girl crushes.

Ian Somerhalder:  They don’t call him Smolder-halder for no reason.

Robin Thorsen:  Duh, The Guild.  Clara has some of the best lines, and she also locks her babies in a kennel.  Amazing.

Michael TrevinoVampyr Diareeeessss.

Paul Wesley:  See above.

I’m also pretty thrilled about Adam West and Burt Ward because, hello, Batman, and also that scene where Batman runs around the docks with the bomb and he has to decide whether to throw it at nuns or at ducks.  I’d throw it at the nuns myself.  J/K.

Obviously I won’t get to see panels with all these lovely people, because Dragon*Con has somanythings going on at once, so one has to pick and choose.  Luckily, this is a pretty good and large list, so I don’t think I can go wrong, y’know?

So which guests on the list made you go “eeeee!!!!” when they popped up on the Dragon*Con site?  Let me know in the comments!

14 Days to Dragon*Con: A Quick Costume Update

Hi guys!  We are TWO WEEKS OUT (WHAT?! YAY!) and  that means it is costume update time!

All my Melisandre components are coming together incredibly well!  My wig, necklace, and belt are all here, and the dress is coming along splendidly.  I met with my seamstress on Sunday and she has the underlayer more or less completed, and is now working on the overlayer.  I’ll be seeing her again this Sunday to try on the double-layered dress so that she can make final adjustments, and then it should be almost ready!  The necklace and belt are also incredible (thanks Valerie–you’re getting your own post later on in the countdown!) and I threw the necklace on with my wig (which still needs styling!) and a red shirt just to get an idea of what the completed package would look like:

Not too shabby right?  I need to fit the necklace to me a little better, and there is SO MUCH WIG happening, oh man.  I need to style it like whoa.  But I’m super excited, I think it is going to be great!

I also did some work on my Portal Companion Cube costume this past weekend, adding some additions to an existing gray dress I own–so far, so good.  And my adorable pink wig came!  Check it out:

I LOOOVVVEEE IT.  I never thought I’d love me with pink hair, but I do.  I think my little Companion Cube costume is going to be super-adorable.

How are your Dragon*Con costume preparations coming along?  Can’t wait to see everyone in their finest!

21 Days to Dragon*Con: Game of Thrones (Part 2)

THREE WEEKS!  This is pretty much how I’m feeling right now, what about you?

So this time two years ago I was posting the teaser trailer for HBO’s Game of Thrones.   Now, two seasons of that show have already passed, how insane is that?  I’m costuming as a screen-accurate Melisandre, and there’s a whole Game of Thrones costume group on Facebook, and now everyone all of a sudden knows what this amazing series is!  I remember my first Dragon*Con only seeing ONE book version Ned Stark and that was it!  And now there are Daenarys swarming the Marriott Atrium!  Which is great!

Another thing that happened during the last two years was the release of the fifth book in the series, A Dance with Dragons–although I feel like the book had a disappointing lack of dragons for a book titled A Dance with Dragons.  While I think the television series is a masterful example of a proper book-to-video translation, I’m pretty much a book purist at heart.  This is really the series that got me into epic fantasy, and lord knows I have spent several years of my life reading other epic fantasy series while awaiting future volumes of A Song of Ice and Fire.  Yes, I know George R.R. Martin is not my bitch, but I would love it if we didn’t have to wait half a decade for a new book!

While we’re waiting, let us watch some wonderful Game of Thrones video memes!

Like ten minutes of Tyrion slapping Joffrey:

Or this great trailer for Bronn and Tyrion’s buddy comedy, One and Half Man (whatever did happen with that jack ass and that honeycomb in the brothel?)

For double nerd cred, we have Jaime and Ned’s sword battle, re-done with lightsabers:

And for cuteness factor, we have Maisie Williams (Arya), Sophie Turner (Sansa), and Isaac Hempstead-Wright (Bran) singing the opening of the show:

And, of course, Ned Stark’s “Winter is coming” has itself become a quickmeme.  Oh, the internets.

I’m sure there are many more mega fun videos out there–I saw a great Lego opening of the show once BUT I CAN’T FIND IT.  Does anyone know where it went?  Also, the “Good to Be a Lannister” song, of course.   If you have any fun videos or memes that I missed, please share them!  Also, go watch the show and/or read the books if you haven’t!  They are the best!   And just in case I haven’t mentioned it yet, this blog and pictures of me are the first things that pop up on Google when you search “Melisandre costume.”  I feel like I am winning the internet!
