Be Like MLK, Give Back to the Community!

The arts non-profit for which I work is currently having an Indiegogo to help raise money for our Emerging Artists Grant program, and I would LOVE for you to contribute to it.  Money raised during the Indiegogo will go directly to the sixteen artists who received the award this year.  Here is a bit about the program:

“Durham Arts Council seeks your partnership and investment to help launch and develop the careers of highly skilled and promising artists who have mastered the basics of their discipline, and are at a critical development moment in their artistic lives where they need funding, encouragement, and recognition of their work.  The DAC’s Emerging Artist Program serves artists in visual, performing, literary, and media arts in five North Carolina counties in the central Piedmont area and has been a vital part of developing artist careers for 29 years.

Each year, 12-16 grants are awarded to artists selected from a highly competitive applicant pool of over 100 artists who apply from Durham, Chatham, Orange, Granville and Person counties.  Each grant of approximately $1,500 funds a project pivotal to the advancement of the artist’s work.”

To learn more about the program, including this year’s winners and also PHOTOS and VIDEO and PERKS, please go to the Indiegogo site.  If you care about the arts AT ALL you’ll want to contribute to this program.  A city without art is not a city, and these artists make our cities awesome in so many ways.  Also, please spread the word around your own communities, we need all the help we can get!

And here is one more link to that Indiegogo site, please go check it out!

And thus, I return.

Hey y’all!  I’m back, and I survived!

Dragon*Con, of course, was super duper fun.  I wore three rockin’ costumes and met lots of great people and did lots of fun things and had lots of kickin’ times.  And, of course, I took a ton of photos of amazing people in their amazing costumes!

Jon and I got back yesterday evening and I careened right back into work today.  In case y’all forgot (or didn’t know), I am helping to plan CenterFest, a giant arts festival coordinated by the Durham Arts Council, where I work.  I hope to start getting my Dragon*Con recaps up soon, but CenterFest planning is so exhausting and work is so stressful right now that when I get home I can barely form a coherent thought.  Also, I am traveling A LOT this month for weddings (EVERYONE IS GETTING MARRIED) and also the High Holidays.  So, it might be a little bit before I fully recap Dragon*Con, because there is a lot to tell!

In the meantime, a few photos to whet your appetite!

Fun right!  Hope y’all had a great Labor Day as well, I look forward to sharing my Dragon*Con with you!

No more days! No more days!

I’m packed (hopefully!) and I am likely on my way to Dragon*Con now (okay, soon, I decided to sleep in just a little bit)!  And that is the best!  I’m so looking forward to a wonderful Con this year.  I have some fun photo shoots with Game of Thrones folks lined up, I have lots of cool “I want to do that” panels entered into my mobile app, I love, love, love my new Melisandre costume, and I’m looking forward to meeting some internet friends in person and being like “YAY FRIENDS.”  In case you can’t tell, I like me some friends.

Yeah, it’ll be like that except my costume is more awesome.

So, I hope to see you there!  I’ll pop back onto the blog sometime after Con to give the run down and to show y’all some pictures.  In the meantime, thank you so much for accompanying me on this iteration of the 50 Days to Dragon*Con countdown!  I hope you had as much fun reading as I had writing, and that it helped to get you even more excited for Dragon*Con!

Catch you on the other side!

3 Days to Dragon*Con: Companion Cube (An Almost-Final Shot)

The Enrichment Center reminds you that the Companion Cube cannot speak. In the event that the Companion Cube does speak, the Enrichment Center urges you to disregard its advice.

Here are a few shots from my nearly-completed Companion Cube dress!  I need to add a few more details to the dress, figure out the wig a bit more, finalize my makeup (wasn’t wearing much tonight, and you can tell!) and better affix the cube to the headband…Oh, and put on some damn Spanx.  This is why I rarely leave the house without wearing Spanx–they make you look 10 pounds thinner!!!

Anyways, enough about Spanx, I’ll be wearing them at Dragon*Con!  MORE PHOTOS.

So that’s the dress!  I think it is pretty cute–if not too complicated, which was sort of what I was going for with this costume, since my other costumes are so complicated!  I plan on pairing it with gray tights and silver ballet flats.  SUPER CUTE RIGHT?

I invited your best friend, the Companion Cube. Of course, he couldn’t come, because you murdered him.

14 Days to Dragon*Con: A Quick Costume Update

Hi guys!  We are TWO WEEKS OUT (WHAT?! YAY!) and  that means it is costume update time!

All my Melisandre components are coming together incredibly well!  My wig, necklace, and belt are all here, and the dress is coming along splendidly.  I met with my seamstress on Sunday and she has the underlayer more or less completed, and is now working on the overlayer.  I’ll be seeing her again this Sunday to try on the double-layered dress so that she can make final adjustments, and then it should be almost ready!  The necklace and belt are also incredible (thanks Valerie–you’re getting your own post later on in the countdown!) and I threw the necklace on with my wig (which still needs styling!) and a red shirt just to get an idea of what the completed package would look like:

Not too shabby right?  I need to fit the necklace to me a little better, and there is SO MUCH WIG happening, oh man.  I need to style it like whoa.  But I’m super excited, I think it is going to be great!

I also did some work on my Portal Companion Cube costume this past weekend, adding some additions to an existing gray dress I own–so far, so good.  And my adorable pink wig came!  Check it out:

I LOOOVVVEEE IT.  I never thought I’d love me with pink hair, but I do.  I think my little Companion Cube costume is going to be super-adorable.

How are your Dragon*Con costume preparations coming along?  Can’t wait to see everyone in their finest!
