36 Hours in New York City: Museum of Modern Art

So, I have a friend who works in the film archives at MoMA and, bless her, she done got Jon and me free tickets to the museum!  Huzzah, thanks friend!

Check out this crazy sculpture that was in the sculpture garden!

Okay so that happened.  Also, this candy installation by Felix Gonzalez-Torres, you could take the candy, it is always replenished, he was such a nut job y’all (hurrrrrr).

Also this hilarious plaque, which I think was by Barbara Krueger?  I might be wrong. I don’t remember.  SOMEONE CORRECT ME IF THEY KNOW, thanks.

Buuutttt the main reason we went to MoMA was for the Cindy Sherman exhibit.  I’m a fan of Cindy Sherman.  I like how she does everything herself: makeup, sets, costumes, taking the photos, etc.  I like how she demonstrates the transformative power of makeup and wigs and fashion, which I am totally into because MAKEUP AND COSTUMES ARE AMAZING.   I like her sense of humor.  The exhibit is pretty great, I recommend checking it out.  Here are a few images from the show, all taken from MoMA’s website.

Liberty Arts Grand Opening

I’ve posted about Third Fridays in Durham before, they are always happening events, especially down by Golden Belt.  This past Third Friday was the Liberty Arts grand re-opening.  Liberty Arts is a metal foundry and iron-working studio that was a Durham institution, until a set of violent storms last year caused its roof to collapse.  Liberty Arts decided to move from its location near Central Park to a fantastic new space in the Golden Belt facilities.  Their grand opening celebration on Friday drew a huge crowd.

A number of food trucks, including The Parlour, Pie Pushers, and Only Burger, were on hand to keep everyone fed.  The weather was unbelievably nice for mid-March, so tons of people were sitting outside.

Lots was happening inside Liberty Arts: glass blowing, metal working, and other demonstrations.  The artists also had lots of pieces hanging around to look at.

I particularly liked this big wax mold of The Last Supper, I thought it looked like a big chocolate bar.

Durham’s own Luchadoras, the group of female masked wrestlers in the Mexican Lucha Libre style, were on hand in black evening gowns and sparkly masks.  I saw a bunch of them roaming around the Golden Belt area, they weren’t there to wrestle, I think they were just enjoying a night on the town.

I Am Published on the Hairpin!

Hi guys!  Amazing news!  My article about my run-in with Patrick Stewart at Dragon*Con (if you have ever heard me talk about Dragon*Con you have probably heard this story) is on THE HAIRPIN and you should TOTALLY GO HERE TO READ IT.   I am so excited and grateful to be published on the Hairpin, which is a website that I love! I am also thrilled to be able to share my writing with a larger audience.   And if you are new to my blog then WELCOME, I hope you stick around some and read some of my writing on Dragon*Con and costumes and Steampunk and other fun and nerdy things!

Work of Art, Jerry Saltz’s Recap of Episode 1

Every week Jerry Saltz writes a recap of Work of Art for NYMagazine.  In case you forgot, Mr. Saltz is one of the judges on Work of Art and he is also the senior art critic for NYMagazine.  I enjoy the recaps almost more than I enjoy (or hate-enjoy) the show.  They help explain the reasoning and critiques of the judges and also de-mystify the reality show process.  For instance, the judging committee is told nothing about the contestants.  Everything they learn they learn via the critiques or by watching the television show.

I also love the recaps because of the comments section.  Mr. Saltz (okay, I’ll call him Jerry, because that’s how I talk to him in the comments), takes the time to read all of these comments and often responds to them.  He encourages his readers to talk about and write about and think about art; I love how he wants to make art and art criticism less scary and more popular.  I hope that he succeeds.

Each week I’ll be posting the link to Mr. Jerry’s recaps and I’ll also be quoting a selection from the article.  Jerry opened his recap this week by explaining why he does this show.  I don’t think he needs to explain: he enjoys it and he finds it fun, why does he need to apologize for participating in something that much of the art world deems silly and inconsequential?  He shouldn’t need to apologize, I’d like to think he’s beyond that point in his career.  I guess the art world doesn’t work like that.
