Dragon*Con 2012 Recap: Thursday

Thursday has become the unofficial “first” day at Dragon*Con, with Thursday night having just as many parties, costumes, and shenanigans as the other nights of Con (except for maybe Saturday?).  I try to get down early-ish on Thursday whenever I can, and this year I had to drive down to Hotlanta by myself.  Jon has just started the dental hygiene program at UNC, and it is the type of program where you can’t miss class unless you have Ebola or a death in the family, so there was no way Jon could miss his lecture on Friday.  I wasn’t going to let his scholastic responsibilities interrupt my fun, however, so I piled all our stuff into my Civic on Thursday morning and made the 6.5 hour drive from Chapel Hill to Atlanta myself.  I am happy to report that it was a totally smooth drive: no weather, no traffic (until I hit Atlanta, of course), and I got to the Sheraton by 5:00.  I found a miracle spot on a lower level of the garage, checked in, and was able to move all our stuff into the hotel room in two easy trips.  AMAZING VICTORY.

Even more of an amazing victory?  I only waited six minutes (literally, I timed it.  I got in line at 5:46 and was out by 5:52) to get my Dragon*Con badge.  The badge pick-up system the Dragon*Con folks put into action last year is a huge success.  It felt extremely weird to not wait at all for my badge, almost as though I had skipped a necessary Con step, but this is a good problem to have!

After I grabbed my bag and unpacked (costumes wrinkle, don’t leave them in your suitcase!) I headed to the food court to grab some Yami Yami sushi all by my lonesome.  Then, to kill a bit of time, I decided to donate blood at Dragon*Con’s Robert A. Heinlein blood drive.  I’ve always wanted to donate in the past, but Con business and Thursday night dinner dates with local friends always cramped my available giving time.  Now, however, I had a free-ish Thursday evening, so I decided to do the good deed thing and give some blood.  Somehow they got a pint of blood out of me in four minutes?!?!  I have no idea how that happened, or how I didn’t pass out after, but it happened.  I also made a few fellow blood donor buddies, who I ran into periodically throughout the weekend.  Giving blood brings us all together!

After giving blood I hustled back to my room to shower and change into costume.  Yes, I costumed on Thursday night and yes, that was a first!  I decided to test run my Companion Cube dress from Portal to see what the response would be.  And, guys, the response was fantastic.

I don’t think I have ever received as many costume call-outs, high-fives, photo-stops, or general happy and enthusiastic responses.  People just loved this costume; everyone knew what it was, everyone was happy to see it.  I wore the Companion Cube several times throughout the weekend (it was my go-to comfortable party costume), and people just loved it every time.  It got the best response out of all the costumes I wore during Con, which is ironic because this is the costume that was held together with double-stick tape and a prayer.  Seriously, I just cut out some felt and ribbon and affixed it to a gray dress I already owned with pink tape.  I bought the wig from Cosplay.com, the headband (it had little hearts on it) from Target, and the Companion Cube plush that I stuck on the headband was a key chain I purchased from ThinkGeek.  The tights and shoes I had in my closet, and the pink heart necklace and pink heart earrings I bought for under $10.00 at Claire’s at the mall.  A seriously easy costume, so it amused me that it got such a positive response.

I mostly hung out in the Marriott on Sunday night and I took a lot of pictures!  I ran into a number of Portal costumers, including the cake and Companion Cube heads photographed up top, and a Chell with a portal gun that had been made by her husband.  The four of us also ran into each other at one point, causing an impromptu Portal photo-shoot.

1 Day to Dragon*Con: A Melisandre Sneak Peek and More!

1 DAY GUYS.  CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?!?!  Time for a miscellaneous post of miscellany.

1)  The Melisandre dress is ALMOST DONE.  The neckline just needs to be hand-stitched, but I was able to get a shot of it almost completed today.  It is SO BEAUTIFUL , I cannot WAIT to show it off at Con, and I cannot wait to put it on with the wig and the necklace and the belt.  Seriously, so beautiful.

Yeah look at those sleeves, amazing right?!

2)  If you want to be my Friend via the Dragon*Con app (and I love friends!!!) just let me know, and I’ll PM you a Friend Code, and we’ll all be friends, and it will be great.  You can also follow me on Twitter, @Dilettantista, if you are social media-ish like that.

3)  And now a series of video clips that make me happy.  Many of these were included in the 2010 Dragon*Con Countdown but I don’t care, these re classics for a reason.  And yes, many of these have a Star Trek tinge, so what?

Unngh isn’t it a bummer that Patrick Stewart isn’t coming?  Whatevs, I’ll just reread how I talked to him at Dragon*Con 2009.

4)  Last night I had a dream that I was eating lunch at Dragon*Con and Stan Lee sat with me, and he had a little fat dachshund mix named Alex with him, and in the corner someone was doing a Captain American — Melisandre multi-fandom costume, and it was all very perplexing and amazing and clearly my brain is very one track right now.

5)  And then I just turned on The Today Show (like I usually do) and the ADORABLE two-face kitty was on, clearly it is a sign!!!

All right, back to work for me guys!  I have costumes to finish and packing to do and so many preparations to make!  And I’m also looking forward to making tons of new memories!  Cheeeeeesy right?!

All right everyone, hang in there, one more dawn, one more day, one day more!

2 Days to Dragon*Con: Making the Wait Go More Quickly

How are you doing with the wait, guys?  This whole going to work thing is not easy, especially because I have a number of major deadlines at work this week and I need to get them all done by Wednesday, so I am incredibly busy and really, I just want to look at Dragon*Con stuff and think about Dragon*Con and talk about Dragon*Con.

So here are some of the things I am doing to mitigate the anticipation:
1)  This blog (duh).  Having a place to count the days is certainly helpful!

2) Big giant happy smiley faces scrawled all over Labor Day Weekend on my calendar.

3) Playing with the Dragon*Con iPhone app, lots and lots.

4)  Eyeing the 2012 Dragon*Con photo scavenger hunt list and trying to figure out where to find all these things–my two big person win photographs from last year were running into Dr. Stephen Granade and finding Timmy the ThinkGeek Monkey.

7)  Listening to this podcast on repeat.  So many bands that I liked from my band profling are in it!  CalabreseEgo LikenessI: ScintillaDie SektorCruxshadows!  A really good song by The Extraordinary Contraptions!  So exciting, and a great way to get hyped for Con!

8) Packing (ungh).

9) Futzing with the last little bits of my costumes and my wigs and my makeup and my accessories.

10) Excitedly waiting to go pick up my Melisandre dress!

Again, those are just a few things that are keeping me sane until Thursday morning comes and I can get on the road to Atlanta.  How are you managing these last few days before Dragon*Con?

6 Days to Dragon*Con: An Eating Guide

I live in a locavore foodie area and I love great food and restaurant experiences, but this is not what Dragon*Con is about.  While I am not normally of the “food is just fuel” mentality, I go into that mode during Dragon*Con.  The weekend is an endurance test, and I want not-too-unhealthy things that will keep me up and running from panel to panel and into the night.  Additionally, if I don’t eat breakfast and if I don’t eat every few hours I turn into a raging hosebeast, so I need to make sure I have these things on hand.  Here are some of my tips and tricks for eating to feel like a human being at Dragon*Con.

1) EAT BREAKFAST.  Preferably, eat it in your hotel room if you can–it saves time and money.  It doesn’t have to be fancy and shouldn’t need to be refrigerated.  I bring a loaf of whole wheat or multi-grain bread with me along with a jar of low-fat peanut butter, and I throw together a peanut butter sandwich in the morning when I wake up (just don’t forget to bring some disposable knives with you).  Easy, cheap, healthy, and protein-packed–just what I need to start the day.  If I need an extra pick-me-up I grab an orange juice from one of the hotel convenience stores.

2)  BRING SNACKS.  We usually have a little cooler that we can fill with ice, so I throw some greek yogurt in there that I can grab as a snack when I’m in the hotel room to fix my makeup.  I also never go anywhere without a granola bar on me–you never know when hunger could strike, it might be in line at a panel or while you are at a party, and you don’t want to have to drop everything and shuffle off to the food court to get some food.  Trail mix and beef jerky are also great options.

3)  Speaking of the food court, it is your friend, and there are ways to eat healthily at the food court.  And also I generally love walking through the food court and seeing people in costumes.   I am a big fan of Moe’s, that sushi place (Yami Yami I think it is called?), and that prepared food place across from the evil Chick Fil-A (I think it is called Cafe Momo).  At Moe’s I usually get a rice bowl or a salad, fill it up with chicken, veggies, and black beans, top it with lots of salsa and dig in.  Yami Yami I typically only hit up once or twice, because it is a little pricey and the line can be long, but they have pretty decent sushi and lots of vegetable options to ensure that you get some green things in you.  And I love Cafe Momo–affordable, lots of healthy protein and vegetable options, and it is usually pretty quick and easy to load up at the prepared foods bar and to be on your way.   There is also a Middle Eastern-ish place somewhere in the food court that offers pita sandwiches and hummus platters, and that’s a solid bet as well, if a bit messy.   All of these places make it very easy to carry your food back to your hotel room so you can eat while watching Dragon*Con TV.  Multi-tasking!

This is what happens if you eat at Chick-Fil-A: You have to wait in line and then the zombie apocalypse comes and then you turn into zombies and eat people and just don’t eat at Chick-Fil-A they fry hate and serve it to you so you get fat. Hate will clog your arteries.

4) That being said, you are on vacation, and it is okay to treat yourself.  I always get at least one Dairy Queen Blizzard, because it is the perfect food, and I sometimes let myself get one fried-food meal although I usually feel pretty gross after, ha, so maybe not this year.  And definitely no evil Chick Fil-A this year.  I love their chicken nuggets, but I prefer my fried chicken to come without a side of hate and intolerance, thank you.  Avoid the pizza place with all your might because it is terrible (unless it has changed ownership).  I’ve also been wanting to try that little noodle place tucked in the corner because it looks yummy, but it always has long lines oi vey.

5)  There is no need to go to a sit down meal, unless this is a thing you like to do at Con?  I have plenty of sit-down meals in my normal life, I’d rather eat and run at Con–there is so much to do, and there is no need to wait for a table at the Hard Rock Cafe, or Fires of Brazil, or Durango.  I know lots of people who have annual dinners with their Con friends, which is cool, but I’d much rather be in the thick of things than going and having dinner elsewhere.  We had lunch at a sit-down restaurant my first year at Con, and my whole experience consisted of me thinking about all the time we were wasting, and how badly I wanted to get back to Con stuff.

But seriously, guys, try to avoid the fast food. I mean, look at what it does to you.

6)  Um, I know this is blasphemous, but I don’t really drink much at Con.  Actually, I don’t really drink much period, and I am such a lightweight that one or two drinks do me in, and I get sleepy so quickly when I drink, and I don’t really have fun or like the way alcohol makes me feel, and I’d rather be aware of my surroundings so I can process all the awesome costumes and remember every detail, so in general I don’t have more than one or two drinks a day.  I KNOW THIS MAKES ME WEIRD, sorry.  Don’t listen to my drinking tips–except for this one.  Buy booze before you go to Atlanta and make your own drinks in the room, and maybe also make a “party bottle” to carry around with you, because the alcohol in the hotels is EXPENSIVE.  Additionally re: booze, do whatever works for you, be safe, and remember to…

7)  HYDRATE.  OMG guys hydrate so much.  I drink a lot of water in my daily life and I probably double that at Con.  All the meeting rooms in all the hotels have water dispensers so make sure to bring a refillable bottle and STOCK UP SERIOUSLY.  Water is your friend.

I have lived by these eating rules and I have yet to get sick at Con (this is likely because I use a lot of hand sanitizer, wash my hands a lot, and generally have a very strong immune system).  Supposedly there are some other secret tips I might be missing, like another food court hidden in the Marriott (although that is only open on Friday), and maybe there are some tucked-away convenience stores I might be missing?  Did I forget anything?  Do you disagree with my tips?  Do you have some tips of your own?  Let me know in the comments!  We’re all in this together!

10 Days to Dragon*Con: Band Profile, Warchild

I’m too tired from the work week (I write these things ahead of time, it is currently Saturday and I am still recovering from a sixteen hour day yesterday) to think of anything witty to start with for Warchild, so I’ll just give you their Dragon*Con profile:

“Warchild is an Atlanta based rock band with a new sound and new idea. Fronted by Steven Warchild who has been quoted as saying “We have something to say not just something to show.” Warchild has a sound that stays with you and a devoted cult following with fans from all around the world.  With two full length CD‘s out that have sold over 12,000 copies and a third on the way it’s easy to see why fans are excited for future. For more information on the band, visit http://www.officialwarchild.com.”

Man, I hope they are a heavy metal band.  Their lead singer, Steven Warchild, totally looks like he’d be a metalhead.  Shall we see?

Eh, kind of metal?  Kind of emo?  Very music video set in New Orleans.

Sort of um, a less interesting, less good version of A Perfect Circle, maybe?  I only have one of their albums by the way, so maybe that isn’t the best comparison.

All the other hits when I search “war child” on youtube are like, sad documentaries of people from Sudan.   And I’m not really digging the music (OR THE LONG HAIR I just don’t get long hair on guys.  Keep it like, Thor or Loki length or shorter people for serious).

Talking points:

–Warchild is a band, not a documentary about Sudanese child soldiers.

–Sort of sounds like A Perfect Circle.

–Lead singer has long hair.

No thumbs.  Don’t think I’ll be tracking them down at Dragon*Con.
