21 Days to Dragon*Con: Game of Thrones (Part 2)

THREE WEEKS!  This is pretty much how I’m feeling right now, what about you?

So this time two years ago I was posting the teaser trailer for HBO’s Game of Thrones.   Now, two seasons of that show have already passed, how insane is that?  I’m costuming as a screen-accurate Melisandre, and there’s a whole Game of Thrones costume group on Facebook, and now everyone all of a sudden knows what this amazing series is!  I remember my first Dragon*Con only seeing ONE book version Ned Stark and that was it!  And now there are Daenarys swarming the Marriott Atrium!  Which is great!

Another thing that happened during the last two years was the release of the fifth book in the series, A Dance with Dragons–although I feel like the book had a disappointing lack of dragons for a book titled A Dance with Dragons.  While I think the television series is a masterful example of a proper book-to-video translation, I’m pretty much a book purist at heart.  This is really the series that got me into epic fantasy, and lord knows I have spent several years of my life reading other epic fantasy series while awaiting future volumes of A Song of Ice and Fire.  Yes, I know George R.R. Martin is not my bitch, but I would love it if we didn’t have to wait half a decade for a new book!

While we’re waiting, let us watch some wonderful Game of Thrones video memes!

Like ten minutes of Tyrion slapping Joffrey:

Or this great trailer for Bronn and Tyrion’s buddy comedy, One and Half Man (whatever did happen with that jack ass and that honeycomb in the brothel?)

For double nerd cred, we have Jaime and Ned’s sword battle, re-done with lightsabers:

And for cuteness factor, we have Maisie Williams (Arya), Sophie Turner (Sansa), and Isaac Hempstead-Wright (Bran) singing the opening of the show:

And, of course, Ned Stark’s “Winter is coming” has itself become a quickmeme.  Oh, the internets.

I’m sure there are many more mega fun videos out there–I saw a great Lego opening of the show once BUT I CAN’T FIND IT.  Does anyone know where it went?  Also, the “Good to Be a Lannister” song, of course.   If you have any fun videos or memes that I missed, please share them!  Also, go watch the show and/or read the books if you haven’t!  They are the best!   And just in case I haven’t mentioned it yet, this blog and pictures of me are the first things that pop up on Google when you search “Melisandre costume.”  I feel like I am winning the internet!

42 Days to Dragon*Con: I TOLD YOU IT WAS A WIIIIIIIG (also, 400th post!)

First: THIS IS MY 400TH POST Y’ALL.  So that’s worth noting!  400 is a lot of posts, yaaaay me.

Now, onto the countdown!

I bought my wigs this week, y’all.

I’m actually pretty lucky with my natural hair–it is crazy that I am saying this, because in middle school I had such an insane Jew-Fro that my classmates made up a song called “Puff the Magic Lindsay” (set to “Puff the Magic Dragon,” of course) and sang it whenever I walked into a classroom.  They also threw chewed-up blow-pops into my really kinky, unmanageable hair.  Classy kids, right?  Anyways, my hair calmed down after puberty and I finally figured out what to do with it.  My hair is pretty thick but it isn’t uncontrollable, and a good flat iron is my best friend.  I like my natural color, it is sort of a warm, dark brown.    I have a good stylist and a good haircut.  However, none of this works with any of my Dragon*Con costumes, so wigs it is.

I haven’t had the best wig luck in the past–they don’t tend to hold up all that well during the Con.  If anyone has any tips for storage and styling, please let me know!

Anyways, here are my wigs.  I decided to give Cosplay.com a try.  We’ll see how it goes.

So that wig is happening in natural red/copper for Melisandre, and in black for Blind Mag (who I am wearing again, duh, it is the bestest and easiest costume).

That’s the rose wig in one of the colors I am getting.

And that wig is happening in a cool pink for my Weighted Companion Cube costume from Portal that I should probably do some work on, but I was out of town last weekend and my best friend from college is coming this weekend, so that’ll have to wait a bit. I’m excited to wear a pink wig–pink isn’t really one of my “favorite” colors, but the Companion Cube color scheme is silver/gray and pink, and a pink wig is definitely more fun than a gray wig.  Might as well give it a whirl, amirite?

How are your costumes coming along?  Do you have any fun wigs ordered?  Do you avoid wigs whenever you can, or are you a drag queen like me, and convinced of the power of BIG HAIR.

48 Days to Dragon*Con: Dragons III, Dany’s Dragons

I was going to write a long post about this season of Game of Thrones and also how I was disappointed by the lack of dragons in A Dance with Dragons and also I was going to talk a bit about Daenerys Targaeryan’s dragons and their names and stuff, but then I decided not to, because if I heard Dany shrill “MY DRAGONS!!!!” one more time this season of Game of Thrones I was going to kill a bitch.  So I give you this instead:

Call Jorah.  Send a raven.

36 Hours in New York City: The HBO Store and Rockefeller Plaza

I know guys, what touristy locations!!!  Who am I, going to these touristy places?  Well, here’s my story.

After breakfast at the Breslin, as detailed in my last post, we decided to walk over to Times Square to see if there were any good matinees available at TKTS, and also to visit my sister who was rehearsing for a show at the Broadway Dance Center.

We were strolling along 6th Avenue when we passed the HBO store, which is right by Bryant Park and across the street from the Museum of the  International Center of Photography.  There was a big Game of Thrones display in the front window, so we decided to poke our heads into the store just because.  And this is what we saw:

GUYSSSS.  That is the very costume that Melisandre wears in her first appearance on Game of Thrones.  THE VERY ONE.  And since I am remaking my Melisandre costume from last year I totally went nuts and took a bazillion photographs because OH MY LORD guys, the costume was right there. (Don’t worry, I won’t show you them all).

Anyways, check out that necklace:

I took pictures of the other costumes as well: they had Jon Snow’s Night’s Watch uniform, Dany’s Dothraki garb, and one of Cersei’s court gowns.  They also had some fantastic props from the show.

GAME OF THRONES HAPPENED (and so did FAT BETTY wow)

Okay so April is really busy for me at work and also life so posts will be sporadic.  Also my family is coming this week, MY WHOLE FAMILY, and they are coming for Passover, which I am cooking for the first night of Seder, so this week is busy because COOKING AND CLEANING.  Also next week is busy because I am going out of town, and the week after is busy because of work and also the week after that.  You get the picture.  So, how about a rapid post about television!!?!?!?!

Wow guys did you SEE Game of Thrones on Sunday?  Melisandre was pretty hot wasn’t she?  Evidently the is topping the Attractive Game of Thrones Power Rankings which, duh (it is the hair, they say).  Also: infanticide, Peter Dinklage getting first billing, more baby killing, idol burning, gorgeous set locations and all around awesomeness.  Most awesome show on television y’all, truly.

Also, did you guys see Fat Betty Draper Francis?!  I just can’t get it out of my head you guys.  I can’t.  Here is a picture:

Yep.  That happened.  Poor January Jones.

Okaaaay I’m going to go back to worrying about work/cooking for Passover/cleaning my house now!  I hope y’all’s April is off to a glorious start!
