Dragon*Con 2012 Recap: Friday

This recap covers Friday at Dragon*Con 2012–click here if you want to read about Thursday!

Friday morning I woke up and watched John Barrowman and Kai Owen‘s panel while dressing in my Blind Mag costume.  John Barrowman was so unbelievably charming, guys.  I want to be his best friend.  I love DC*TV (when it works) because it lets you maximize all your Con time.  Sure, I was in the hotel room, but I was watching the panel, laughing along with the panel, and being jealous of the beefy Spartan that John Barrowman ran his hands all over.  Siiiiigh.  All the good ones, right?

Anyways, as soon as I was dressed I headed out…and ran immediately into this amazing Nicholas D. Wolfwood from Trigun (above).  I spent much of the first part of Friday ducking into a panel or two (notably the Battlestar Galactica panel with Katee Sackoff love me some Starbuck!), grabbing some lunch, and taking tons of pictures:

This was a big latex reptile suit thing that I only saw out once–the rest of the weekend it was in a little wooden box/cage.  This thing was amazing.

I went into a little ball-jointed doll meet-up, on behalf of my mother, where I saw lots of lovely ball-jointed dolls in lovely clothes, including this little sleeping beauty.

These were just a few of the many My Little Pony costumes I saw throughout the weekend.

And then I saw Dani (you’ll see a lot more of her in the photos from Game of Thrones shoot I participated in on Sunday) in this FANTASTIC Illyria (from Angel) costume.

Seriously, look at how great she looks!!!

I just loved this Green Lantern Jedi.  How cool is he?

After a bit of wandering around I ducked into the Exhibitor’s Hall.  While strolling the booths, this gentleman chased me down for a photograph.  His name is Larry Elmore, and he has made a successful career and life for himself creating fantasy art for book covers, playing cards, and tabletop games such as Dungeons and Dragons.  Larry paints “witchy women,” and he wanted me to pose for him, as I fit the bill.  I was so flattered!  He shot a few pictures of me, and then we took the picture below together.  Larry had a huge booth with a lot of merchandise–I told him that he’s so lucky that he gets to do what he loves for a living, and that he is so successful at it!  He just grinned and said, “I know.”  What a lovely, lovely man!

Dragon*Con 2012 Recap: Thursday

Thursday has become the unofficial “first” day at Dragon*Con, with Thursday night having just as many parties, costumes, and shenanigans as the other nights of Con (except for maybe Saturday?).  I try to get down early-ish on Thursday whenever I can, and this year I had to drive down to Hotlanta by myself.  Jon has just started the dental hygiene program at UNC, and it is the type of program where you can’t miss class unless you have Ebola or a death in the family, so there was no way Jon could miss his lecture on Friday.  I wasn’t going to let his scholastic responsibilities interrupt my fun, however, so I piled all our stuff into my Civic on Thursday morning and made the 6.5 hour drive from Chapel Hill to Atlanta myself.  I am happy to report that it was a totally smooth drive: no weather, no traffic (until I hit Atlanta, of course), and I got to the Sheraton by 5:00.  I found a miracle spot on a lower level of the garage, checked in, and was able to move all our stuff into the hotel room in two easy trips.  AMAZING VICTORY.

Even more of an amazing victory?  I only waited six minutes (literally, I timed it.  I got in line at 5:46 and was out by 5:52) to get my Dragon*Con badge.  The badge pick-up system the Dragon*Con folks put into action last year is a huge success.  It felt extremely weird to not wait at all for my badge, almost as though I had skipped a necessary Con step, but this is a good problem to have!

After I grabbed my bag and unpacked (costumes wrinkle, don’t leave them in your suitcase!) I headed to the food court to grab some Yami Yami sushi all by my lonesome.  Then, to kill a bit of time, I decided to donate blood at Dragon*Con’s Robert A. Heinlein blood drive.  I’ve always wanted to donate in the past, but Con business and Thursday night dinner dates with local friends always cramped my available giving time.  Now, however, I had a free-ish Thursday evening, so I decided to do the good deed thing and give some blood.  Somehow they got a pint of blood out of me in four minutes?!?!  I have no idea how that happened, or how I didn’t pass out after, but it happened.  I also made a few fellow blood donor buddies, who I ran into periodically throughout the weekend.  Giving blood brings us all together!

After giving blood I hustled back to my room to shower and change into costume.  Yes, I costumed on Thursday night and yes, that was a first!  I decided to test run my Companion Cube dress from Portal to see what the response would be.  And, guys, the response was fantastic.

I don’t think I have ever received as many costume call-outs, high-fives, photo-stops, or general happy and enthusiastic responses.  People just loved this costume; everyone knew what it was, everyone was happy to see it.  I wore the Companion Cube several times throughout the weekend (it was my go-to comfortable party costume), and people just loved it every time.  It got the best response out of all the costumes I wore during Con, which is ironic because this is the costume that was held together with double-stick tape and a prayer.  Seriously, I just cut out some felt and ribbon and affixed it to a gray dress I already owned with pink tape.  I bought the wig from Cosplay.com, the headband (it had little hearts on it) from Target, and the Companion Cube plush that I stuck on the headband was a key chain I purchased from ThinkGeek.  The tights and shoes I had in my closet, and the pink heart necklace and pink heart earrings I bought for under $10.00 at Claire’s at the mall.  A seriously easy costume, so it amused me that it got such a positive response.

I mostly hung out in the Marriott on Sunday night and I took a lot of pictures!  I ran into a number of Portal costumers, including the cake and Companion Cube heads photographed up top, and a Chell with a portal gun that had been made by her husband.  The four of us also ran into each other at one point, causing an impromptu Portal photo-shoot.

And thus, I return.

Hey y’all!  I’m back, and I survived!

Dragon*Con, of course, was super duper fun.  I wore three rockin’ costumes and met lots of great people and did lots of fun things and had lots of kickin’ times.  And, of course, I took a ton of photos of amazing people in their amazing costumes!

Jon and I got back yesterday evening and I careened right back into work today.  In case y’all forgot (or didn’t know), I am helping to plan CenterFest, a giant arts festival coordinated by the Durham Arts Council, where I work.  I hope to start getting my Dragon*Con recaps up soon, but CenterFest planning is so exhausting and work is so stressful right now that when I get home I can barely form a coherent thought.  Also, I am traveling A LOT this month for weddings (EVERYONE IS GETTING MARRIED) and also the High Holidays.  So, it might be a little bit before I fully recap Dragon*Con, because there is a lot to tell!

In the meantime, a few photos to whet your appetite!

Fun right!  Hope y’all had a great Labor Day as well, I look forward to sharing my Dragon*Con with you!

No more days! No more days!

I’m packed (hopefully!) and I am likely on my way to Dragon*Con now (okay, soon, I decided to sleep in just a little bit)!  And that is the best!  I’m so looking forward to a wonderful Con this year.  I have some fun photo shoots with Game of Thrones folks lined up, I have lots of cool “I want to do that” panels entered into my mobile app, I love, love, love my new Melisandre costume, and I’m looking forward to meeting some internet friends in person and being like “YAY FRIENDS.”  In case you can’t tell, I like me some friends.

Yeah, it’ll be like that except my costume is more awesome.

So, I hope to see you there!  I’ll pop back onto the blog sometime after Con to give the run down and to show y’all some pictures.  In the meantime, thank you so much for accompanying me on this iteration of the 50 Days to Dragon*Con countdown!  I hope you had as much fun reading as I had writing, and that it helped to get you even more excited for Dragon*Con!

Catch you on the other side!

1 Day to Dragon*Con: A Melisandre Sneak Peek and More!

1 DAY GUYS.  CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?!?!  Time for a miscellaneous post of miscellany.

1)  The Melisandre dress is ALMOST DONE.  The neckline just needs to be hand-stitched, but I was able to get a shot of it almost completed today.  It is SO BEAUTIFUL , I cannot WAIT to show it off at Con, and I cannot wait to put it on with the wig and the necklace and the belt.  Seriously, so beautiful.

Yeah look at those sleeves, amazing right?!

2)  If you want to be my Friend via the Dragon*Con app (and I love friends!!!) just let me know, and I’ll PM you a Friend Code, and we’ll all be friends, and it will be great.  You can also follow me on Twitter, @Dilettantista, if you are social media-ish like that.

3)  And now a series of video clips that make me happy.  Many of these were included in the 2010 Dragon*Con Countdown but I don’t care, these re classics for a reason.  And yes, many of these have a Star Trek tinge, so what?

Unngh isn’t it a bummer that Patrick Stewart isn’t coming?  Whatevs, I’ll just reread how I talked to him at Dragon*Con 2009.

4)  Last night I had a dream that I was eating lunch at Dragon*Con and Stan Lee sat with me, and he had a little fat dachshund mix named Alex with him, and in the corner someone was doing a Captain American — Melisandre multi-fandom costume, and it was all very perplexing and amazing and clearly my brain is very one track right now.

5)  And then I just turned on The Today Show (like I usually do) and the ADORABLE two-face kitty was on, clearly it is a sign!!!

All right, back to work for me guys!  I have costumes to finish and packing to do and so many preparations to make!  And I’m also looking forward to making tons of new memories!  Cheeeeeesy right?!

All right everyone, hang in there, one more dawn, one more day, one day more!
