41 Days to Dragon*Con: Band Profile, Crüxshadows

Before my next profile, I just want to point out that my 41 Days to Dragon*Con in 2010 was all about the trailer for the last two Harry Potter movies, and those movies have happened at this point, and the movies were pretty fantastic don’t you think?  My, how time flies.

Also, I’m only going to be doing musical performers–Crossed Swords is a stage combat group, hopefully that’s pretty self-explanatory!

Anyway, you probably know the next band I’m profiling, so I’ll keep this brief.  The Crüxshadows have been at Dragon*Con for as long as I’ve been going (and longer, of course), and they’re one of the first bands I saw during my first Dragon*Con in 2009.  They do gothy, dancey music and they have a cross-like symbol and their motto is “Live, Love, Be, Believe.”  Their lead singer/organizer is a man named Rogue, who has weird hair:

The band has a lot of electronic classical instruments, in particular violins, and a posse of backup dancers in skimpy clothes, who are called the Crüxshadows fairies.   The band is based in Florida–they were founded in Tallahassee (which is a terrible city) and they’re now located in Jacksonville (which is a slightly less terrible city).  I’m from Florida and my mother is from Jacksonville (my grandmother still lives there), so I can say these things.  You probably know the Crüxshadows from their booth in the music exhibition area of the Marriott–they’re always playing the same three or four songs over and over at top volume.  They are also one of the few (maybe the only) band that has a group march in the parade.

Confession:  I love the Crüxshadows.  I try to see them every Con if I can.  I like their music, I listen to it regularly–particularly at the gym, it is good for cardio.  I like their live show.  I like that everything is sort of choreographed and that Rogue has lights on his hands and also that he likes to go out and do a few songs in the center of the audience.

So, here are a few songs from the Crüxshadows, if you aren’t already familiar with them.  I hope you like them, I know I do.

“Quicksilver”:

“Sophia”:

See, I totally like this stuff.

Talking points:

-Maybe the most popular band at Dragon*Con?  At least they have the loudest booth.  Also a parade group!

-Lead singer with weird hair, skimpily-dressed backup dancers.

-Gothy-electronic music

-Pretty fantastic live show.

Two thumbs up, duh.

The Time I Went to Disney World for my 23rd Birthday

I was once lucky enough to go to Disney World over my birthday, and it was not my 9th birthday (I saw Phantom of the Opera for my 9th birthday, which spawned a year-long Phantom obsession that included me dressing up as the Phantom for Halloween, which is clearly what normal 9-year old girls do).  I went to Disney World for my 23rd birthday.  And it was awesome.

Photo by me! And all other photos in this article too.

Look at that cake!  That’s my Mickey Mouse cake!  That I got when I was 23!

Anyways, backstory:  My birthday always fell over Spring Break in college and graduate school.  I decided to go home during my first Spring Break in graduate school, because North Carolina was cold and Florida was warm and therefore Florida seemed better.  My mother casually suggested that we should do something special for my birthday, like go to Disney World, and I was immediately all: “YES. YES PLEASE. YES LET US GO TO DISNEY WORLD KTHNX.”  I grew up two hours from Disney World, and went to Disney tons of times as a kid.  Also, I collect plush Mickey Mouses (yes, still, I just got this for myself and I am definitely a full grown adult maybe probably) and so Disney World is pretty much a happy place for me. Fortunately, I really like my family a lot (I know not everyone does and I know I am lucky) so the idea of spending a few days in Disney World with my family sounded like happy fun times to me.

Which is how I ended up at the gates of EPCOT on the morning of my 23rd birthday.  For some reason the ticket person wanted to see all our IDs, and when she saw it was my birthday she said, “OH MAN HAPPY BIRTHDAY.  HERE IS A BIRTHDAY BUTTON YOU NEED TO WEAR IT.”

You can sort of see the button there. And also the Mickey Mouse Luke Skywalker Action Figure that I got. For my 23rd birthday.

BroNYCon!

No, I did not go to BroNYCon (I haven’t watched enough Friendship is Magic to be legit), but I did read this great article about BroNYCon while watching the beginning of the really dull and underwhelming SEC West Championship BCS Championship.

I had a friend who went to a Florida game at LSU and they saw rednecks fans rednecks dragging around dead baby alligators.

Also Alabama is just terrible.

So basically I loathe both of these teams.

Anyways, read the article on BroNYCon, it will make your night better.  I mean people give testimonials on how the ponies saved their lives guys:

Steve Decker, a Maryland Brony who was selling from his stock of hundreds of My Little Pony toys, each of them carefully enclosed in a Ziploc baggie, said that “My Little Pony” saved his life when he discovered it in 2004. His work as a student loan collections officer was making him suicidal. “My job was literally to ruin peoples’ lives,” he said. “Every day, I’d hope to get into an accident and die on my way to work.” Looking for some small, simple happiness, he went to Toys “R” Us. The boy toys were all focused on killing and violence, while many of the girls’ dolls were slutty or stupid, he said. The 2-for-1 sale on My Little Ponies clinched it for him.

See guys, friendship is magic.

Look at how appropriate this image is guys!

Happy Federal Holiday!

I’m off today, are you off?  My goal today was to stay in pajamas until I went to my High Intensity Interval Training and Core classes tonight at 5:30, and so far so good.  Florida is currently playing the hated the Ohio State Buckeyes at the TaxSlayer.com (heh) Gator Bowl in Jacksonville.  Andre Dubose just ran a kick-off return 99 yards for a touchdown so that was awesome!  Unfortunately this Florida vs. tOSU match-up will not end like this:

Both teams are 6 and 6, which is just pathetic and sad, but it would be nice to beat the Buckeyes (again) because Urban Meyer just et tu Brutused (heh) us and is now headed there to coach.  Sigh.  Anyways, YAY FOOTBALL PLEASE LET US BE BETTER NEXT YEAR.

Today is also being brought to you by the sleeping kitten in my lap and by my flat-iron staying put in its box.  Don’t you love those days where you don’t do your hair or put on any makeup?  Is that just me?  I don’t have many of them, so I’m sure my hair and skin cherishes each and every one.

Back to work tomorrow!  I hope y’all are enjoying this last day of laziness as much as I am.
