1 Day to Dragon*Con: A Melisandre Sneak Peek and More!

1 DAY GUYS.  CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?!?!  Time for a miscellaneous post of miscellany.

1)  The Melisandre dress is ALMOST DONE.  The neckline just needs to be hand-stitched, but I was able to get a shot of it almost completed today.  It is SO BEAUTIFUL , I cannot WAIT to show it off at Con, and I cannot wait to put it on with the wig and the necklace and the belt.  Seriously, so beautiful.

Yeah look at those sleeves, amazing right?!

2)  If you want to be my Friend via the Dragon*Con app (and I love friends!!!) just let me know, and I’ll PM you a Friend Code, and we’ll all be friends, and it will be great.  You can also follow me on Twitter, @Dilettantista, if you are social media-ish like that.

3)  And now a series of video clips that make me happy.  Many of these were included in the 2010 Dragon*Con Countdown but I don’t care, these re classics for a reason.  And yes, many of these have a Star Trek tinge, so what?

Unngh isn’t it a bummer that Patrick Stewart isn’t coming?  Whatevs, I’ll just reread how I talked to him at Dragon*Con 2009.

4)  Last night I had a dream that I was eating lunch at Dragon*Con and Stan Lee sat with me, and he had a little fat dachshund mix named Alex with him, and in the corner someone was doing a Captain American — Melisandre multi-fandom costume, and it was all very perplexing and amazing and clearly my brain is very one track right now.

5)  And then I just turned on The Today Show (like I usually do) and the ADORABLE two-face kitty was on, clearly it is a sign!!!

All right, back to work for me guys!  I have costumes to finish and packing to do and so many preparations to make!  And I’m also looking forward to making tons of new memories!  Cheeeeeesy right?!

All right everyone, hang in there, one more dawn, one more day, one day more!

4 Days to Dragon*Con: Thanks for the costume help!

I need to pause here to do a big shout out to Nancy over at Hemlock Emporium and Valerie over at Antiquarian Boutique for making my Melisandre costume for me!

Nancy’s doing the dress–I’m headed to Raleigh for final alterations today, it should be ready just in time to pop into my suitcase for Dragon*Con!  I might save the final reveal until the convention so don’t expect any photos, I really think that this costume is going to be special so I’m trying to keep the whole thing a surprise.  This dress has been quite difficult–it took Nancy a long time to find an appropriate pattern, and she likens the top layer of fabric to cobwebs, but it looks like it will come together gorgeously.  I’m a big fan of Nancy because she shares my general costuming viewpoint: try to capture as much of the general look and feel of the costume as possible without forgetting that this is a garment that needs to be worn in the real world.  She’s great at offering suggestions on how to make a piece more wearable, and she also doesn’t look at me like I’m nuts when I ask for changes.  This is my third Dragon*Con with a costume that has been made or altered by Nancy.  I’m so glad I found someone local who I like and who I know will be able to help me with my costuming needs!  Everyone in the Raleigh-Durham area should go get costumes from Nancy, she’s the best!

Valerie I found on the Game of Thrones costuming group on Facebook (yes it exists).  I was publicly bemoaning the difficulty of Melisandre’s giant neckpiece, and she quickly offered to make it for me and I happily accepted.  A few months later I received, in the mail, a handmade full neckpiece complete with the shoulder parts, and a belt, and they are great!  The pieces are very truthful to the screen version but they are light weight and fairly easy to wear.  Again, no close-up pictures from me yet, but Valerie took some good pictures that you can see in this album.   She really did an incredible job with a complex, highly-detailed commission.

Thank you so so much Valerie and Nancy!!! I’m so excited to put all the Melisandre pieces together!  This is going to be such a baller costume, I can feel it.  For the night is dark and full of awesome!

14 Days to Dragon*Con: A Quick Costume Update

Hi guys!  We are TWO WEEKS OUT (WHAT?! YAY!) and  that means it is costume update time!

All my Melisandre components are coming together incredibly well!  My wig, necklace, and belt are all here, and the dress is coming along splendidly.  I met with my seamstress on Sunday and she has the underlayer more or less completed, and is now working on the overlayer.  I’ll be seeing her again this Sunday to try on the double-layered dress so that she can make final adjustments, and then it should be almost ready!  The necklace and belt are also incredible (thanks Valerie–you’re getting your own post later on in the countdown!) and I threw the necklace on with my wig (which still needs styling!) and a red shirt just to get an idea of what the completed package would look like:

Not too shabby right?  I need to fit the necklace to me a little better, and there is SO MUCH WIG happening, oh man.  I need to style it like whoa.  But I’m super excited, I think it is going to be great!

I also did some work on my Portal Companion Cube costume this past weekend, adding some additions to an existing gray dress I own–so far, so good.  And my adorable pink wig came!  Check it out:

I LOOOVVVEEE IT.  I never thought I’d love me with pink hair, but I do.  I think my little Companion Cube costume is going to be super-adorable.

How are your Dragon*Con costume preparations coming along?  Can’t wait to see everyone in their finest!

21 Days to Dragon*Con: Game of Thrones (Part 2)

THREE WEEKS!  This is pretty much how I’m feeling right now, what about you?

So this time two years ago I was posting the teaser trailer for HBO’s Game of Thrones.   Now, two seasons of that show have already passed, how insane is that?  I’m costuming as a screen-accurate Melisandre, and there’s a whole Game of Thrones costume group on Facebook, and now everyone all of a sudden knows what this amazing series is!  I remember my first Dragon*Con only seeing ONE book version Ned Stark and that was it!  And now there are Daenarys swarming the Marriott Atrium!  Which is great!

Another thing that happened during the last two years was the release of the fifth book in the series, A Dance with Dragons–although I feel like the book had a disappointing lack of dragons for a book titled A Dance with Dragons.  While I think the television series is a masterful example of a proper book-to-video translation, I’m pretty much a book purist at heart.  This is really the series that got me into epic fantasy, and lord knows I have spent several years of my life reading other epic fantasy series while awaiting future volumes of A Song of Ice and Fire.  Yes, I know George R.R. Martin is not my bitch, but I would love it if we didn’t have to wait half a decade for a new book!

While we’re waiting, let us watch some wonderful Game of Thrones video memes!

Like ten minutes of Tyrion slapping Joffrey:

Or this great trailer for Bronn and Tyrion’s buddy comedy, One and Half Man (whatever did happen with that jack ass and that honeycomb in the brothel?)

For double nerd cred, we have Jaime and Ned’s sword battle, re-done with lightsabers:

And for cuteness factor, we have Maisie Williams (Arya), Sophie Turner (Sansa), and Isaac Hempstead-Wright (Bran) singing the opening of the show:

And, of course, Ned Stark’s “Winter is coming” has itself become a quickmeme.  Oh, the internets.

I’m sure there are many more mega fun videos out there–I saw a great Lego opening of the show once BUT I CAN’T FIND IT.  Does anyone know where it went?  Also, the “Good to Be a Lannister” song, of course.   If you have any fun videos or memes that I missed, please share them!  Also, go watch the show and/or read the books if you haven’t!  They are the best!   And just in case I haven’t mentioned it yet, this blog and pictures of me are the first things that pop up on Google when you search “Melisandre costume.”  I feel like I am winning the internet!

25 Days to Dragon*Con: Halfway There!

Oh man guys, we’re halfway through the countdown, and we’ve only got 25 more days to Dragon*Con!

On 25 Days to Dragon*Con in 2010 I posted the trailer for the 4 Days at Dragon*Con documentary.  And then about a year ago, at the end of July 2011, I posted a link to the actual 4 Days at Dragon*Con documentary, and also had a giant mini-fame moment because I AM TOTALLY IN THE DOCUMENTARY.  If you want to find me start at the thirty-six minute mark, and then at thirty-six minutes, ten seconds, there I am, tearing up the dance floor.  Since this documentary was filmed at my first Dragon*Con (in 2009) I have so much nerd pride at having made it into the film!

Since we are at the halfway mark, I figure it is time for all of us to re-watch the film (or watch it for the first time, if for some reason you haven’t watched it).   EVERYONE SHOULD WATCH IT, you can get access to it here.   It will give you so much joy as we head into the final stretch before Con!

I hope everyone’s Dragon*Con preparations are going well!
